Frequently Asked Questions

Krav Maga is a self-defense system originating in Israel, where it is still used by the Israeli Defense Forces today. Focussing on reality-based principles of self-defense instead of rules or forms, it is not simply a set of techniques—it is a system devised to help you, or your child, go home safe! These principles include the following, among others:

  • Techniques must be made accessible to the average person, not just athletes. It should also be able to be used by a smaller individual against a larger one.

  • Techniques should, when possible, defend and counterstrike simultaneously, or near so.

  • One defense must work against a variety of attacks.

  • It should be based on natural, instinctive responses people already have, and so be able to be learned quickly, without years of training to master the basics.

  • Techniques must work from a position of disadvantage.

  • It should follow principles that work under stress and in real, live, dynamic situations.

Krav Maga contains elements of Judo, Jiu Jitsu, and kickboxing. We train in striking, grappling, and weapons defenses to ensure that we are prepared for the reality of the world. The goal of our classes is the same as that of the founder of Krav Maga, Imi Lichtenfeld: So that one may walk in peace.

Our head instructor, James McPheeters, has been training in Krav Maga since 2016, and has been teaching since 2021. He holds a 3rd degree black belt under Mr. Mark Taylor in Lawrence, KS. He also has trained and earned an advanced rank with Ernie Kirk, the US representative for the Wingate Institute in Netanya, Israel (the birthplace of Krav Maga).

What is Krav Maga?

Do I need to be athletic to start?

No! Krav Maga was designed to be able to be used by athletes as well as those who are older or out of shape. We have taught young athletes as well as people who haven’t hit the gym in years. There is a challenge and an opportunity to grow for everyone who comes to our classes.

Do I need prior martial arts experience?

No! Our classes have all types, from people who have been training in martial arts since they were kids, to people who have no experience. Krav Maga was designed to be quick to learn and easy to remember so that it could be effective in real situations.

Do you teach kids?

Yes! We have classes for kids and adults. Our kids classes start at age 5. Check out our classes to see all about our age groups and different programs!

What are your schedule and prices?

We have two different programs (for each age group), so that you can find the best fit for your training needs. You can find the pricing and descriptions by going to our Classes page, and we have our schedule on the Schedule page.
